Osun State Police Tuesday confirmed that some hoodlums attacked a police team, stole their guns and went on a shooting spree killing two persons.
According to the Osun police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the incident occurred on Monday around 11:00 am along the Ibadan–Ife Expressway.
He said the police team was responding to a distress call around the Ikire community in Irewole Local Government Area when they were attacked by hoodlums.
“Upon arrival at the location, the officers came under sudden and unprovoked attack by a group of unidentified hoodlums. The assailants opened fire on the police officers while they were inside their operational vehicle and succeeded in snatching one AK‑47 service rifle.
“The hoodlums used the stolen weapon to fire indiscriminately, resulting in the tragic loss of two innocent civilians. The deceased have been identified as Nurení Sobowale, male, aged 49 years, of Odeda Area, Abeokuta, and Saheed Akinrole, male, aged 43 years, of Adeagbo Compound, Ikire. Two police officers sustained serious injuries during the attack.” Ojelabi said in a statement.
“The remains of the two deceased civilians have been deposited at Oluyoro Catholic Mortuary, and their families have been duly notified. The injured police officers were initially taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment and have since been referred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, for advanced medical care, “the statement concluded.
He added that the patrol van also snatched during the attack was later recovered but was riddled with bullets and the windshield smashed up.
Perhaps the incident was a welcome party for newly appointed Commissioner of Police (CP) of Osun State, Ibrahim Zungura. He was at the scene of the shooting and has ordered a comprehensive investigation and the culprit brought to the book.
