Mary Habila the health worker who died in the country home of Nigeria’s minister of works David Umahi has been buried in her hometown Nok in Jaba local government area Kaduna State with her family claiming she died from a heart disease.
There were no autopsy reports to confirm the real cause of death, which occurred on June 27, 2026, in Ebonyi State. Nigerians were concerning about what killed the 26-year-old-old, especially when Mr. Umahi’s statements she had a bleeding nose and spoke to her boyfriend the night before her death didn’t add up with Ebonyi police findings.
Habila’s father Tanko Habila Wisdom a Pastor with the Deeper Life Bible Church vehemently opposed any form of autopsy to be conducted on his daughter.
The Ebonyi State ministry of justice recommended to the police there was a need for autopsy, since her body bore signs of blunt force trauma. However, the matter died a natural death as Habila’s remains were transported to Abuja and was buried last Friday after two months of no information concerning the cause of her death.
“Mary Habila lived with a heart condition, having been diagnosed with a hole in her heart,” the family stated in her autobiography
According to the family her condition “became critical and sadly passed away following a cardiac arrest.”
However, the public demand for autopsy seems to have been ignored and this has raised suspicions of a cover up.
“She was buried without any autopsy conducted on her to determine the exact cause of her death,” SaharaReporters quoted sources.
The Southern Kaduna Peoples United Associations (SOKAPU), which had filed a ₦20 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit seeking an independent investigation and forensic examination, but according to its president Samuel Kato, they were not inform of any forensic examination of the body.
“I’m not sure whether autopsy was done or not. It wasn’t communicated to us. I don’t know whether police authorities at headquarters ensured the autopsy was done but it was never communicated to the union.”
