Nigeria Democratic Congress vice presidential hopeful, Rabiu Kwankwaso has quarried the involvement of Nigeria Revenue Service executive chairman Zacch Adedeji and Budget Office director-general Taminu Yakubu in President Bola Tinubu’s 108-member campaign team.
President Tinubu kicked off his campaign for the 2027 general elections last Saturday with the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council, which opposition parties have criticised the composition.
Former Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari, senator representing Zamfara west, and Hope Uzodimma, Imo governor, as director-general and secretary of the council, respectively. Mr. Adedeji is deputy director fund raising and Mr. Yakubu acting as treasurer.
Kwankwaso who is a former Kano State governor argued in a statement that Adedeji and Yakubu should be working for Nigerians and not for President Tinubu and his All-Progressive Congress party.
“The leadership of critical public institutions demands neutrality, integrity and public confidence. It is therefore legitimate to ask whether the responsibilities of senior officials entrusted with managing public revenue and national finances can appropriately coexist with senior partisan campaign roles,” Kwankwaso stated.
He also called on campaign director-general Yari to think twice about running the campaign of a government that has neglected the well-being of the people he represents.
“As a former governor of Zamfara State and a prominent leader from the North-West, I believe Senator Yari has a clear understanding of the devastating consequences of insecurity, poverty, unemployment, displacement and the destruction of livelihoods in the region and the country at large,” Kwankwaso said.
“I therefore will be surprised if, in his good conscience, he will lead a campaign whose principal objective is to secure the continuation of a government under which many of the people he once governed, and other innocent Nigerians, remain trapped in these challenges.”
