What could have been another Plateau massacre was prevented by Nigeria army troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace on Saturday.
According to reports by security expert ZagaZola Makama dozens of armed men were marching down to attack Manja community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, but for the timely intervention of the OEP troops who moved into positions and forcing the armed gang to retreat.
“They responded by launching a pursuit operation against the suspected attackers while maintaining a strong security presence around the community,” Makama wrote.
This was coming a few days after the OEP troops foiled a similar planned attack on the Manja community following an attack in neighbouring communities.
Several residents believed to be Fulani were killed on August 16 in Jwak Maitumbi community, Mangu LGA of Plateau, while about 45 residential shelters and large quantities of crops were destroyed.
Less than 48 hours later, suspected Fulani militia invaded Bin-Per community in Kombun district of Mangu and killed at least 23 people, including women and children, in what appeared to be a reprisal.
Security sources said efforts are ongoing to maintain pressure on the suspected attackers and ensure the safety of residents in Manja and neighbouring communities.
