Nigeria Football Federation is heading into crisis as its president Ibrahim Gusau and secretary-general Sanusi Mohammed, both shunned the invitation for a meeting of the NFF executives with concerned government officials at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.
Though there was no clear detail on the agenda of the meeting, but there are indications it has to do with the public demand for the resignation of the NFF executive board, following the national football teams… the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, Flying Eagles, Golden Eaglets’ failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in their respective categories.
This is despite the Federal government’s approval of a N12 billion grant for the NFF to settle all outstanding allowances owed the players and also ensure the country’s flag is flown at every tournament involving highly rated football nations.
Already the call for Gusau and his board to resign is getting loader and the according to sources the government is keen to see the back of the board members as a measure of political expediency based on the public outrage. Following the development according to reports the NFF board has been given 24 hours to resign by the National Sports Commission.
Gusau and secretary-general Mohammed were unreachable for comments Thursday.
Gusau and his supporters on the NFF board are said to be hiding behind FIFA’s dislike for government interference and they are hoping to ride out the storm. According to reports Gusau and these supporters are currently in Katsina State for the final of the Alhan Gusau Cup.
Meanwhile the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are investigating the spending of the N12 billion grant.
According to the NFF it was complying with the investigation and all documents concerning the funds have been sent to the government anti-corruption agency for cross checking.
