Nigerian athletics officials were thrilled by 17-year-old Iyanuoluwa Aderemi after she posted 50.95 seconds in the women’s 400m race of the Dynamic Athletics Meet Saturday at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Yaba Lagos.
Subject to rectification the time is the new under-18 record national record, eclipsing the 52.28 held by Favour Ofili since 2018. Aderemi’s 50.95 seconds run is the third best Nigerian women 400m time this season.
Aderemi from Ondo State was meant to run in the youth category of the Dynamic Meet, but she insisted on running with the seniors and she turned out to be a revelation as she dusted Esther Peter Okon a 2026 world relay team member and other seniors.
Okon came second in the race with a time of 51.22, Oyinyechi Success Onu was third with 54.31 seconds.
Though athletics buffs enjoyed Aderemi’s thrilling run, opinion was split on whether she was running clean. However, her coach Ogunmakinju Adeleye insisted that she was a raw talent who has not spent up to a year in track and field. He hinted that she is a national treasure that must be supported to fulfil her potentials.
Aderemi, during the national trials in July had posted 51 seconds, but she did not appear in the final as she hurriedly left with her coach back to Ondo, since they couldn’t afford to stay extra days in Lagos after the Athletics Federation of Nigeria rescheduled the competition.
