The three continental federations spearheading the call for FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s resignation are unrelenting as they questioned his moral standing to continue to lead the world football governing body.
UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC representing Europe, North and Central America and Asia respectively, 0n Monday in a letter to the football family stated that Infantino was no longer trustworthy to lead FIFA.
“This is about something more fundamental: the integrity of the game, and the integrity of those elected to lead it. Leadership in football is not a possession. It is not about holding – or demanding – power to be held,” the letter read.
“It is a duty of service to the football family that entrusts it. When trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned.”
Though Infantino has apologised for his misstep of wanting to sell a percentage of football stake to a private individual without consulting with the member associations, UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC want him gone; stating that it was a “fundamental breach of trust” which warrant his leaving the organisation.
“It is not the conduct of a custodian of the game, but of one who believes the game is answerable to him. There is silence where there should be accountability, distance where there should be openness,” the letter reads.
FIFA insists Infantino will finish off his term. He continues to enjoy the support of the Confederation of Africa Football, while so far CONMEBOL the South American federation has been silent in the matter, but Argentina has thrown its weight behind Infantino. Oceania federation (11) has also kept mute.
