European football governing body UEFA Thursday insisted that under fire FIFA president Gianni Infantino must quit his position.
This is coming on the heels of FIFA’s endorsement of Infantino to continue after its council meeting Wednesday in Morocco. FIFA apologised over the furore the FIFA Forward Enterprise muted by Infantino without consultation with member associations.
A UEFA statement said: “UEFA’s associations were very clear about the conditions attached to the non-participation in FIFA competitions.
“First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn, and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.
“These conditions have not been met. In addition, UEFA made it abundantly clear in its statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency. That position holds.
“Yesterday’s (Wednesday) announcement that some people employed by the FIFA President (and whose careers depend on his favour) agree with him changes nothing.”
Meanwhile according to reports the UK Guardian Infantino further infuriated UEFA as documents revealed that he plot to take over the ” European Super League” project which rejected in 2021 and rebrand it FIFA Super League.
FIFA had drafted a “term sheet” for the competition as early as October 2020. This document outlined a vision where the breakaway would be rebranded as the “FIFA Super League”.
The proposed agreement included a 12-year partnership that would have seen FIFA take over the entire commercial operation of the league. Perhaps most controversially, the documents suggest that Infantino sought a “golden share” in the breakaway entity.
This would have given the FIFA president unprecedented personal and institutional power over the biggest clubs in world football, including the Premier League’s “Big Six,” while potentially linking the success of the new league to the expansion of the FIFA Club World Cup.
