Portuguese football legend Luis Figo has lashed out at under fire FIFA president Gianni Infantino following his infamous quest to sell football stakes to private investors.
This is just Infantino is desperately trying to hold on to his job and has been making consultations in Rabat, Morocco.
However, Figo the first former football great to speak against Infantino, said it was time the Swiss left the stage amidst speculations Figo himself will throw his hat into the ring. In 2015 he launched a bid to become the first ex-international football star to vie for FIFA president, but he withdrew at the last stage.
“Today I join others from across our game and call for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President,” Figo said in a post on X.
“I could write 10,000 words on the problems at FIFA. But the solution needs only three: Infantino must go.
“Believe me, I have met some rogues in my time in the game.
“But what I have seen exposed in the last 10 days is the lowest, most deceitful and cravenly self-interested behaviour I have ever witnessed.
“The man who would do that -– the man who would try to force through such major changes just to enrich himself and his friends -– is a relic of the game’s past and should have no part in its future.”
Though Infantino succumb to pressure and jettison the plan his quest for a fourth and final term in office is on the line as UEFA the most powerful federation insists that he must step aside.
“The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family,” UEFA said in a statement.
