There was no stopping Nigeria’s 400m sensation Samuel Ogazi from winning the 2026 Commonwealth Games gold and he did it with a grand performance becoming the first Nigerian to win gold in the event.
Ogazi arrived in Glasgow as the world leader in the men’s 400m with 43.38secons season’s and personal best and there was no doubt at the Scotstoun Stadium, the title was his for the taking.
And it was electric when he kicked at the last curve leaving his chaser Jeremy Richards of Trinidad and Tobago playing catch up. Ogazi finished a decent 44.25seconds just shy James Kirani record of 44.24 seconds Games record.
Richards finished at 44.85 secs, while South Africa’s Zakhiti Nene clocked 45.21secs to take the bronze.
“It feels good,” he said after winning the title. “I’ve always told myself, ‘Samuel, you have to put Nigeria on the map.’”
“I feel like I am ready for anything right now. I am ready for anybody,” Ogazi said after the race.
In the women’s race Ella Onojuvwehwo was beaten to the third place clocking 51.00 in the race won by Jamaican
Dejaene Oakley with a 50.21seconds effort, and Barbados’ Sada Williams with 50.99 took the silver.
Onojuvwevwo is the first Nigerian to win a medal in the women’s 400m at the Commonwealth Games in nearly 30 years since Fatima Yusuf won gold at the 1990 Auckland Games.
