Since starting his campaign to be “King of Scotland” at 2026 Commonwealth Games Ugandan boxer Aziz Abdul grabbed the headlines for being the grandson of dictator Idi Amin.
Boxing in the super heavyweight category Thursday he was thrown out of the contest for headbutting his opponent Damar Thomas of England. However, the 25-year-old Abdul claimed that it was an unintentional foul, which the judges gladly pounced to disqualify him based on his race and nationality.
“When you watch the previous fights of England their boxers create a lot of fouls,” Abdul told BBC Sport.
“I land a heavy punch on him, they never count. Instead of counting they deduct me.
“I am black African. He is in homeland.”
“It was not intentional. I was trying to come back. How can I headbutt someone? I would not. He elbowed me. He caught me with the elbow.”
His grandfather was boxer holding the Ugandan light-heavyweight title for nine years from 1951, while he was in the army. He later became Ugandan leader known for his brutal reign.
Abdul said he was inspired by his grandpa: “Sometimes people say positive about him, but others say negative about him,” he explained. “That’s why I don’t want to talk more about him.
“It’s not good to say something negative about someone who is not there, and it’s not good to say something about someone negative who was not there by the time when the incident happened, if it happened.”
