There times African champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi Thursday clinched the 2026 Commonwealth Games men’s shot put gold medal beating New Zealand’s Tom Walsh who dominated that division in two editions.
This time around Enekwechi who picked the silver at Birmingham 2022 Games, was not ready to play second fiddle to Walsh a tested thrower who won gold at the London 2017 World Championships and twice bronze medlist at the Olympics 2016 and 2020 Games.
Enekwechi heaved 21.07m and put a smile on the faces of desperate for gold Nigerian officials and fellow athletes at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. Walsh picked the silver with a throw of 21.03m, in one of the closest field event contests of the Games. England’s Scott Lincoln took the last podium spot with 20.99m.
“What is particularly pleasant is Enekwechi’s consistency, he has been in the world top five for some time now and he keeps on doing what he does best,” said coach Gabriel Opuana.
“And from the way he is going with a little more push he can make a difference at the World Championships next year.
