Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers Tuesday smashed an illegal University operating from a three bedroom flat in Ilado, Olorunda Local Council Development Area Badagry, Lagos State.
Operators of the unrecognised University according to reports recruited unsuspecting students by introducing a Ponzi like promotion which rewarded any student who lured another student to register for courses.
The students were made to believe the fake institution is affiliated to a foreign university which offers worldwide recognition.
About 106 students between the ages of 19-24 were shocked to find out they were scammed. The operator of the fake university, which had no name and received patronage from Nigerians and some other West African countries was taken into custody.
The Badagry Area Commander of the NSCDC, Chief Superintendent Gbenga Ekunola, stated that the operation followed credible intelligence on activities at the apartment.
“We had reliable intelligence about the activities going on there. Our officers monitored the place for days before moving in. We have arrested the proprietor, who is assisting with our investigation, while the students have been taken into our protective custody,” he noted.
Preliminary investigations showed that the victims were allegedly persuaded to pay admission and processing fees ranging from N200,000 to N1.5 million.
