Norwegian top striker Erling Haaland delivered the knockout punch that sent Cote d’Ivoire Elephants out the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win in their round of 32 tie played at the Dallas Stadium Arlington, USA Tuesday.
Antonio Nusa’s classy goal curled into the far corner of the Ivorian net in the 39th minutes gave Norway the lead. In the second half Amad Diallo scored in the 74 minute to reward the Elephants for their hard fighting to get back into the game.
But Haaland tapped in from a cross in the 86th minute to seal the win for the Norway making their first round of 16 appearance since 1998, they will be meeting Brazil. It was also Haaland’s fifth goal of the tournament.
Cote d’Ivoire’s coach Emerse Fae groaned about his side’s missed chances after getting close on several occasions.
“That’s football. When you get chances, you have to score,” said coach Fae
“We did the hard part by equalising. Unfortunately, we conceded that goal at the end. It’s a shame. The players gave it their all and played until the very end.
“We were up against a spirited team that defended well and managed to secure qualification. At this level, it comes down to the little details. You have to stay focused from start to finish, no matter the opponent.
“It was everyone’s first World Cup. I think the players have learned a lot. Now, we’ll work on coming back stronger for the next challenges.”
