African long jump record holder at 7.17m, Ese Brume is now in a race to be fit for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria officials caused a minor stir by including her in the list of selected athletes for the CWG despite not being at the trials and has only participated in one meet this season where she jumped 6.59m.
“Brume is a two time CWG gold medalist and she has the best jump outdoors this season,” AFN technical director Gabriel Okon explained.
“Our projection is that by July when the Games start she would be in her best shape.”
Meanwhile up and coming long jumper Prestina Ochonoghor is back in the list of selected athletes after she was initially omitted despite being at national trials she won with a 6.57m jump.
This season she has a season best of 6.69m she achieved indoors in February.
At the 2024 Olympics Games she alongside Brume and Ruth Usoro were in the final of the women long jump. Usoro with a season best of 6.65m indoor was not at the trials, but she was at the African Championships in May, where she failed to make the podium.
Australia’s Delta Amidzovski has the season’s best jump of 6.82m in the Commonwealth.
