Serena Williams and big sister Venus Williams are to play at Wimbledon after getting doubles wild card
The tennis sisters are six-time doubles champions at Wimbledon, winning their last title on their most recent appearance together a decade ago.
Serena played her first match since 2022 last week at Queen’s Club, winning one round alongside Victoria Mboko before the Canadian was forced to pull out through injury.
The seven-time Wimbledon singles champion joked on court after the victory that she “had nothing better to do” and “got tired of sitting at home”, so she decided to return to the sport she once dominated.
She later added that the comeback was partially inspired by the prospect of her two daughters, Olympia and Adira, being able to watch her play.
Serena and Venus Williams won a combined 21 titles on the storied grass of the All England Club in their singles and doubles careers and now they’re going for one more.
The move comes after 44-year-old Serena recently returned to competition after nearly four years away from professional tennis.
Venus, who has still been competing sporadically, turns 46 on Wednesday.
The sisters have won 14 Grand Slam titles together in doubles, including six at Wimbledon — the first of them in 2000 and the last in 2016. Their first two doubles titles at Wimbledon, in 2000 and 2002, came as wild cards. Agency reports
