A personal assistant attached to the former minister of power Adebayo Adelabu was the orchestrator of his sister’s kidnap in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The Oyo State Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, revealed that the personal assistant named Shehu and two other persons have been arrested.
Adelabu’s sister Olaide Adegoke John Paul and her twin 12-year-old boys Peter and Paul were kidnapped on June 3 and were later rescued by the police on Saturday June 6, at a location in Ibadan. The Oyo State government on Monday pulled down the building where the victims were held.
According to Ayanlade, Shehu supplied the information to the criminal gang that carried out the job.
“The one who was with the family, who happened to be a personal assistant by name Shehu, was one of those who we picked. He was the one that was first approached by the gang to give them inside information of how the family lives, their lifestyle, their routine and all,” Ayanlade said during an interview on Channels Television.
He hinted that one of the suspects known as Ololu who was arrested and quizzed led to the arrest of Shehu.
“Of course, one of the perpetrators by name popularly called Ololu has been on the command’s watch list. The operatives continued to trail him until his eventual arrest,” Ayanlade said.
He said another suspect known as Dare Solution was also arrested as investigations continued.
The suspects, according to the police, wanted to kidnap only Mrs John Paul, but Peter and Paul later came into the picture.
“The initial plan was to kidnap the mother. However, they realised that it was the driver who usually takes them to school, and they changed their plan to go for the kids. Unfortunately, that day it was the mother who drove them to school, and they swung into action,” Ayanlade disclosed.
During the rescue operation two suspects were gunned down including one identified as Kelechi who travelled from Lagos to join in the crime.
“They opened fire on the operatives, and then the operatives professionally and with tactical precision neutralised him and the second, who was also there to give a covering fire for him,” he said.
