Athletics Federation of Nigeria officials are optimistic the Confederation of Africa Athletics senior championships bill to start May 12 in Accra, Ghana would not be just a testing ground for up-and-coming athletics talents.
According to AFN technical director Gabriel Okon, Nigeria is aiming to dominate the continent and also put its athletes on a competitive edge ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The AFN is parading a youthful squad of athletes with some regulars like Tobi Amusa who is eyeing her fourth title in the women 100mh and also Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who will be in the men’s shotput to do likewise.
“Our aim is not just exposing our young team but to win overall,” said coach Okon before the team’s scheduled early morning training on Friday.
“Also, we want our athletes to set the tone with good performances for the Commonwealth Games, and most importantly our men and women 4x400m who are yet to qualify for the World Champions have another chance to do so in Accra.”
The team made up of 25 female and 20 male athletes are being expected to arrive the Ghanaian capital at the weekend.
