US Congressman representing West Virginia’s 2nd district Railey Moore has urged President Donald Trump to take more “force action” against his Nigerian counterparts President Bola Tinubu as more terror attacks hit Plateau and other middle belt States.
Mr. Moore and other US officials had decried what they believe is genocide against Christians in Nigeria. He was reacting to a recent video circulating online showing gunmen attacking people at mass grave burial site for victims of a previous attack in the Nding Susut community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area on Tuesday night, killing several residents. The gunmen returned on Wednesday to attack mourners gathered for the burial of the victims.
“The Nigerian government responded swiftly to quell a coup in Benin, while they stand by as their own Christian citizens are brutalised, makes these absolutely horrific scenes unfolding in Plateau state all the more unconscionable,” Moore said in a post on X social media platform.
“Now, I am asking the Trump administration to take forceful action to defend our innocent brothers and sisters in Christ in the Middle Belt of Nigeria, the epicenter of an ongoing Christian genocide.
“Christians — who were gathered for a mass burial for those killed in a previous attack — were viciously murdered by radical Islamic terrorists, the Nigerian government could root out the terrorism and stop the martyrdom of its own citizens. But, despite receiving early warnings of impending attacks, they are nowhere to be found as Christians are murdered for their faith, like lambs led to slaughter,” said Mr. Moore.
Meanwhile former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar, condemned the attack.
“The violent crises in Plateau State have become an open sore that Nigeria must urgently heal. What is happening is no longer random violence. It is a recurring pattern of coordinated terror attacks against vulnerable communities,” Atiku said in a statement.
“That attackers could reportedly return to the same community barely 24 hours later to unleash another round of bloodshed is a damning indictment of the government’s failure to respond swiftly to distress calls and secure vulnerable communities.”
