Up and coming quarter-miler Ezekiel Asuquo said Nigerian quartets are determined to reach the finals of their respective events in the 2026 World Relays billed for Gaborone, Botswana May 2-3.
As the team left Lagos on Monday for Botswana, Asuquo said based on their preparation and the mood in camp, the athletes have one mission and that is to turn up with performances that will improve on their respective world relay rankings.
“First all for me it is a great feeling being part of the team to the World Relays.
“We are well prepared; our spirits are high. Our target is to make the top eight, so that we can qualify for the world championships next year, being on the podium for us will be a bonus,” said Asuquo.
The contingent, made up of 24 athletes a blend youth and experience, will compete in all six relay events at the championship.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria technical director Gabriel Okon who will lead other four coaches to the championships said the athletes are well motivated have done excellent work during practice to spring surprises.
This year’s World Relays carries added significance, offering qualification pathways to both the World Athletics Championships in Beijing 2027 and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
A total of 723 athletes from 40 countries are registered, underscoring the scale of competition.
