Activities at the Nigeria Aquatics Federation remain at a standstill following the sudden death of its president Chamberlain Nnamdi Dunkwu.
Dr. Dunkwu died in early March on the opening day of the swimming competition he sponsored in Abuja, throwing the federation and the swimming family in Nigeria into a mourning and confusion.
“Things have come to a halt at the NAqF…his death was a big blow to all of us we are yet to get over the shock of losing him suddenly,” said a member of the federation.
“Hopefully after his burial sometime next week between Tuesday and Wednesday, we would have a clear focus of what to do next.”
Dr. Dunkwu was widely respected for his commitment to the development of aquatic sports in Nigeria. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen the structures of swimming and other water sports, while creating pathways for young athletes to showcase their talents nationally and internationally.
“Dr. Dunkwu believed strongly in the power of sports to transform lives, especially among young people. His vision for aquatic sports development was clear, and his dedication to that cause was admirable. The Nigerian sports family will surely miss his leadership, wisdom, and enthusiasm,” said National Sports Commission director general Hon. Bukola Olapade in a statement.
