Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone said his attacking midfielder Ademola Lookman has much more to offer the Spanish club following his goal that earned them a UEFA Champions League semi-final slot.
Atletico survived a Barcelona FC scare in Tuesday night’s quarter final with two quick goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres.
But Lookman scored before halftime to break Barcelona’s resolve and Atletico held on to sail through on 3-2 aggregate.
“We need more from Lookman. He has more in his tank. We’ve seen it in Nigeria,” Simeone said.
“He’s still evolving. He’s improving a lot defensively, which makes him even more important. And, of course, he’s carrying more weight in the team.”
He added that Atletico has never had a player like Lookman.
“Since I’ve been in the club, we never had players like that with those features.
“He’s brilliant offensively. He’s very courageous. He’s very good on the one-on-one.
“His offensive importance, giving pace to the team when he was on the ball, was key.”
Lookman who joined Atletico in January has scored six goals in all competitions.
