All six Nigerian relay teams have been cleared to participate in the 2026 World Athletics Relays billed for May 2-3, 2026, in Gaborone, Botswana.
The qualifications achieved mostly by home-based athletes, according to Athletics Federation of Nigeria president Tonobok Okowa is a result of the federation’s drive to look inwards and development more athletics talents.
He pointed out that this result was borne out of the six weeks camping of athletes in Asaba, Delta State and he was grateful for the unflinching support of the National Sports Commission and the director-general Hon. Bukola Olapade for taking a personal interest in track and field.
“We are laser focused on repositioning Nigerian track and field with home-based development of talents as our core interest,” said Chief Okowa.
“Qualifying all our teams for the World Relays Extravaganza is the result of our foresight and hard and we must thank the NSC for all their support…things can only get better as we go forward in the season and also, as we look ahead to the big events to come.”
Nigeria’s qualification for the World Relays was also strengthened by the teams’ participation at the Lefika International Relays and the Orange Botswana National Championship, where Team Nigeria delivered impressive timing that secured their place among the world’s elite relay nations.
Nigeria like every other nation that has qualified for the event has up April 13 midnight to confirm their teams’ participation.  The event include 4x100m men and women, 4x100m mx, 4x400m men and women, 4x400m mx
