Bournemouth Saturday posted a 2-1 upset win at the Emirates Stadium to keep Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes on hold.
Arsenal was never in control of the game, and it was a huge price to pay in front of their fans who had expected a comfortable victory to keep their title chase in focus, and it turned to be a shocking afternoon when Bournemouth who have gone 12 games unbeaten took lead with a Junior Kroupi goal.
Arsenal were given a lifeline when Viktor Gyokeres tucked away a handball penalty to level up the game.
In the second half Arsenal laboured to find their feet as Bournemouth prove difficult to dismantled. In the 74th minute Alex Scott put Bournemouth ahead after Arsenal defence went to sleep.
Title rivals Manchester City play against Chelsea on Sunday and Mikel Arteta can only hope they fail to find the three points they are looking for at Stamford Bridge. A win for City will put them in good position to close the gap before they meet Arsenal on April 19.
Arteta said: “It’s very disappointing obviously. It’s a big punch in the face and it’s about how we react now.
“Normally we are very consistent. This can happen; this is football. We were far from the level today. It hurts the players a lot, and it has to. There are no grey areas now: you stand up and go for the fight, or you are out. That’s it. We are still in a really good position in both competitions. But we need to do better.”
