Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Joash Amupitan’s impartiality has been questioned once more after he allegedly made online posts celebrating the victory of President Bola Tinubu.
A tweet he allegedly made in 2023 recently surfaced according to reports. Responding to an All-Progressive Congress leader Dayo Israel who posted results of the 2023 election, the INEC chairman responded with @joashamupitan, “victory is sure.”
However, the INEC chairman dismissed the reports denying he posted politically patronising comments and also, he does not operate such X account.
“We wish to place it on record that several of such fraudulent accounts had been identified and reported to security agencies in the past. This latest fabrication is merely a continuation of a criminal pattern aimed at exploiting the Commission’s profile for illicit gains.
“The Commission will not fold its arms while the character of its leadership is being assassinated by digital imposters and mischief-makers. We wish to notify the public that we are working in close collaboration with relevant security agencies and cyber-intelligence units to track and identify the individuals or groups behind this identity theft and misinformation,” said Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman in a statement.
That notwithstanding David Mark led African Democratic Congress national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi posted on X that Amupitan have to resign.
“The recent revelation linking a pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu tweet of 2023 to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Amupitan, is not merely disturbing, it is a grave affront to the integrity of our electoral system,” Mr Abdullahi stated.
“This is not a trivial matter. It is a calculated assault on truth and accountability. A man who manipulates records to save himself cannot be trusted to safeguard the mandate of millions,” the party spokesman said.
“Over the past few days, it has been repeatedly revealed that Professor Amupitan, by his conduct, his utterances, and now by incontrovertible digital evidence, has fallen far below the standard expected of an electoral umpire,” Mr Abdullahi stated.
