The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it is postponing the earlier announced nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
According to a statement made available to the media by INEC national commissioner and chairman of voters education committee, Mohammed Haruna the exercise which was scheduled to begin April 13 has now been kept on hold.
The decision, according to him, followed a crucial meeting between INEC and its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country.
“Following deliberations, the commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 General Election,” the statement read.
“The voter revalidation exercise is considered a key part of INEC’s efforts to maintain an accurate and credible voter register. It usually involves the confirmation of voters’ details, removal of invalid entries, and inclusion of eligible Nigerians who may have been previously unregistered or whose records require updates.”
The commissioner said, “INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.”
There had been calls by stakeholders for INEC to shift the exercise due to tight schedules of 2027 electoral cycle.
