Pockets of disturbances in Jos the Plateau State capital were brought under control by security forces Wednesday.
Protests over the killing of 30 people in a bar last Sunday by unknown gunmen turned violent on Wednesday with at least two persons dead. A mob of youths patrolled the streets attacking unsuspecting residents and travelers, and setting homes and shops ablaze.
Throughout Wednesday morning, security forces sped through the city to disperse crowds, at times shooting into the air. Sunday’s massacre occurred in Anguwan Rukuba, a neighbourhood popular with the University of Jos students and staff.
There was tension around the University community as students and staff feared for their lives.
A social media user, Rhoda Nanre, in a distress message circulating online, called on Nigerians to draw the attention of authorities, including the President and the Inspector-General of Police, to the unfolding situation.
“We are calling on all friends and comrades to tag the Nigerian president and IGP to urgently send protection to Jos especially UNIJOS NOW!!!! They are so scared,” she wrote.
