Football administrator Samson Adamu has stepped into the role of secretary-general of the Confederation of African Football.
He replaces Swiss Congolese born Véron Mosengo-Omba who had held sway at the Cairo, Egypt headquarters of CAF since 2021. Adamu, who is the son of famous Nigerian sports administrator Amos Adamu during the period was deputy general secretary.
Mosengo-Omba said Sunday he was stepping down “to devote myself to more personal projects.”
“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever,” Mosengo-Omba said Sunday in a statement published on social media.
Mosengo-Omba had faced allegations of financial misconduct, but CAF announced in January 2025 that the Swiss Public Prosecutor´s Office had decided to stop investigations against Mosengo-Omba “as they found no facts or legal basis to initiate legal proceedings” after he faced allegations of financial wrongdoing.
Mosengo-Omba is a university friend of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who followed him from UEFA to FIFA in 2016.
CAF has been rocked by recent ugly episode of the Africa Cup of Nations final hosted by Morocco on January 18. The on-field controversies of alleged biased officiating against the winners, ended this month with the CAF Appeal Board stripping Senegal of the title based on a petition filed by Morocco.
The petitions had earlier been dismissed by the CAF disciplinary committee and both countries fined for the misconduct of their players and fans.
