A man identified as Emi Sigah has lost his life for being unable to control his lust. He was lashed to death for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl.
According to reports Mr. Siga, 47, was sentenced to 120 strokes of the cane as tradition demands in the Ekowe community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
The incident, which occurred Wednesday saw the accused collapsed when he had only received 40 strokes of the cane. He was alleged to have grabbed the girl who accompanied her aunt to harvest Okra in the farm.
They were on their way home when Mr. Sigah allegedly ambushed the girl without the knowledge of her aunt. He was later caught in the act of sexually assaulting the girl in the bush by community members.
“Flogging a rapist in this community is a tradition in Ekowe,” said a community member.
“12 families will lash the rapist 12 strokes of the cane, amounting to a total of 120 strokes. This acts as a deterrent against sexual offences, which are considered as sacrilegious act in the community.”
Before the flogging some individuals pleaded with the youths of the community to spare the suspect with an offer N50,000 fine, but this was rejected by the youths who insisted that the tradition must be followed to serve as deterrent to others.
Ayebaitaru Easterday who is the chief press secretary to the Southern Ijaw Local Government area Mr. Target Segibo, confirmed the development. He said the police have detained the youth president and three other person who organised the flogging of the suspect.
“Much as the LG do not condone the repugnant rape of the minor, the action of the youths is against the law,” Mr Easterday said.
“It would have only been commendable if they had reported the matter to security agencies for the law to take its course.
“We salute the affected family and the Ekowe community for embracing peace and not allowing the matter to escalate.”
