An army officer Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon is under arrest after being involved in a series of scams targeting government, individuals and corporate bodies.
Last week Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon was at the Abia government house in Umuahia, where he was rewarded by the Abia State governor Alex Otti for allegedly leading the operation that captured and killed kidnap kingpin Obioma Nwankwo, popularly known as “Osisikankwu.”
It turned out that he was con artist who misled the Abia state governor and other government officials. He was financially reward with promise to help him with treatment abroad from an injury he suffered in an accident.
According to reports by the Guardian, the Nigeria Army has put him under arrest for the false claims of leading the operation that captured and killed “Osisikankwu.” The army revealed that Amoke Simon has been under investigation for large-scale impersonation and financial fraud involving more than N114 million.
According to military sources, Amoke Simon attached to the Army Engineers Corps in Lagos, was arrested at the Port Harcourt International Airport while allegedly attempting to travel to Abuja.
Army records revealed that Amoke Simon was not not part of the 2010 operation in Abia State. Officers, who participated in the mission maintained that the exercise was led by then Major Timothy Oparon under the command of Brig.-Gen. Andrew Audu and involved a team of 26 soldiers deployed to track the gang leader in the forest. The operation reportedly ended with the killing of the suspect, the rescue of several kidnapped victims, and the recovery of weapons.
Amoke Simon was not also deployed to Borno where he claimed to have had an accident he allegedly used to seeking assistance.
