Former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, on Monday was sentenced to a 72 years’ imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
Mr. Nwabuoku was dragged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on chrages of fraud involving N868.46 million. He has been standing trial since January 15, 2025, on nine counts of money laundering.
The court found him guilty after evaluating evidence presented by the prosecution, which detailed how the funds were allegedly laundered through multiple transactions.
“The former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, who was prosecuted by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Abuja, for money laundering involving N868.46 million, has been convicted and sentenced to jail for 72 years,” said the EFCC in a statement posted its X social media platform.
The sentence, which totals 72 years, reflects the cumulative penalties for the counts on which he was convicted.
Nwabuoku was appointed acting Accountant-General of the Federation in May 2022 following the suspension of Ahmed Idris over an alleged N800 million fraud, but was removed a few weeks later.
