The Police in Delta State Nigeria said they are investigating the sexual assault of several women in the so-called “Ozoro raping festival.”
On March 19 every year is the day town folks mark the Ozoro festival. According to tradition women and girls are not permitted to come outside; they would sexually assaulted if they do. Several online videos circulating show young men chasing females who came out, stripping off their clothes and molesting them.
“Many girls have reportedly been raped and molested by men in Ozoro during what is being described as “raping festival” in the area.
“According to multiple reports and videos circulating online, today is said to be the day of this festival in the Ozoro community, and girls are warned not to go outside. It is alleged that any girl seen outside could be attacked and raped by groups of men.
“Foreigners who are unaware of this situation have reportedly fallen victim as well.
“There is Delta State University in Ozoro, and many female students may not be fully aware of the danger. It is disturbing that something like this could be tolerated in society. This is heartbreaking, and urgent action needs to be taken,” X social media platform by user @teeniiola wrote
However, Delta State police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said Friday, that the police has asked women who were molested to come forward with information as the Commissioner of Police Delta State, Aina Adesola has ordered an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile the organiser of the festival and four others have been arrested by the police.
“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing. The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident. The command condemns this in totality, no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens.
“The Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Aina Adesola urges Deltans to remain calm while assuring that those responsible for this barbaric act will be arrested and brought to justice. The command also calls for witnesses who can provide with useful information that can aid the ongoing investigation.”
