Nigerians desperate to leave Iran have been using the Armenian route to get out of the country ravaged by US and Israeli air strikes.
As the war intensifies Nigerian embassy officials in Iran arranged for Nigerians wishing to leave to use the border between Iran and Armenia to escape into safety.
“Willing Nigerians are being escorted across the Armenian border by officials of the Nigerian embassy in Iran for safe passage. No Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war as officials remain at the border to receive all who want to leave,” Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa, stated on her X social media platform
She said once the air space is safe for travel evacuations would be arranged for Nigerians.
There are many Nigerians currently stranded in Qatar one of the Middle East countries targeted by Iran as they aim at US targets.
“Once the airspace is safe to fly you will be evacuated,” Abike noted while responding to Nigerians wishing to leave Doha.
The government has been under pressure to provide clear exit routes as regional airspaces, including those of Qatar and the UAE, face intermittent closures.
“The Federal Government is monitoring the situation and would take necessary steps to ensure no Nigerian life is endangered,” a recent statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read.
