Singer Omah Stanley Didia a.k.a Omah Lay has claimed that Afrobeats is mainly for Yoruba born artists with Lagos being the centre of gravity.
Omah Lay who was speaking recently at the listening party of his album “Clarity of Mind,” argued that other artists who are not Yoruba have found it difficult to break even in the genre.
“Afrobeats is mainly Lagos. It is mainly Yorubas. Fela Kuti is the pioneer, we all know that and he is Yoruba. I am from Port Harcourt, and you have to break into Lagos. There are only two people from PH that you know: Burna Boy and me.
“It got to a point I am like; you know what? I am going to take my time and look at my family and fans; people who really love me, I am going to stay there. The rest of you, the rest of the world, don’t love me. That is, it,” he said.
Omah Lay alongside Davido got nominated for a Grammy Award for the collaboration “With You.” They did not win, but according to Omah Lay he had an experience with barbers while in LA.
“I went to LA for the Grammys, I got a barber to prepare for the show, and he messed me up. I got another barber who was like the best barber in LA, and his price was exaggerated to fix me up. He came, and he completely f me over,” he said.
