Super Falcons players have been outraged by the postponement of the Women Africa Cup of Nations by the Confederation of African Football.
On Thursday CAF announced that the tournament billed to start March 18 and end April 3 has been shifted to July 25 -August 16, 2026, following mixed messaging from host Morocco. The nations participating in the tournament had been preparing and ready to travel in a few weeks’ time.
“African women football deserves better.” Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade wrote on her X social media platform with an angry emoji.
Also, midfielder Christy Ucheibe and Ashleigh Plumptre had their say.
“It’s actually disrespectful to what we represent! We deserve respect.” Ucheibe stated.
“Many teams haven’t even been in AFCON before, never mind had the chance to qualify for a World Cup.”
Defender Plumptre added: “It just wouldn’t happen for other tournaments in women’s football — and especially in men’s football.”
Meanwhile, Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili said it was disappointing the WAFCON has been postponed.
“As teams we had already prepared and done a lot in readiness for the tournament. It is disappointing that the competition has been postponed at the last minute, but we respect the decision by the organisers,” said Fazili.
The tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making the sudden change even more disruptive for teams.
