Nigeria’s Afrobeats singer Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa a.k.a Joeboy said South Africa’s Tyla deserves the recent Grammy Awards in the “Best African Music Performance ‘ category.
Burna Boy had argued that Tyla wasn’t really dishing out Afrobeats and it is a wonder why she has won back-to-back Grammy Awards.
Joeboy weighed in on the issue while speaking on Jay On-Air podcast recently.
“Personally, I was rooting for Davido to win the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammys, but you can’t take it away from Tyla. She is an amazing artiste, whether you accept it or not. She really put in the work,” Joeboy said.
“People can be angry all they want, but she deserved the Grammy win. I can’t fault her triumph.”
Tyla clinched the award with her hit “Push 2 Start”, surpassing strong competition from Nigerian stars Burna Boy (“Love”), Ayra Starr and Wizkid (“Gimme Dat”), as well as Davido (“With You” featuring Omah Lay) and Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin (“Hope & Love”).
The award was her second Grammy, having won her first in 2024 for her hit single ‘Water.’
